AIS Interviews Capital BlueCross Exec on New Oncology PCMH Pilot Program
Washington, DC (PRWEB) December 03, 2015 -- As the costs of oncology care rise, some insurers are taking a value-based approach to lowering costs without sacrificing the quality of care. The December 2015 issue of Atlantic Information Services, Inc.’s (AIS) AIS’s Value-Based Care News (VBC) features an interview with Capital BlueCross’ senior medical director on one new way the insurer is approaching oncology management: a program that is transforming four oncology practices into patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs), which launched as a pilot this summer. Denise F. Harr, M.D., tells VBC that the objectives of the PCMHs “are to demonstrate medical value in our approach to oncology care, address the Triple Aim — satisfaction, quality and cost — and provide a consistent approach to end-of-life care.”
The PCMH will improve quality of care in the following ways, Harr tells VBC:
- “The implementation of standardized evidence-based processes and proactive symptom management,
- “Improved patient experience and engagement through shared decision-making and patient-centered processes,” and
- “Lowering costs from better care coordination and by reducing avoidable complications that result in emergency department visits or hospitalizations.”
Harr says the PCMHs’ progress will be evaluated at six-month intervals.
