Al-Anon Family Groups Welcome Parents During September National Recovery Month
Virginia Beach, VA (PRWEB) September 16, 2015 -- Al-Anon Family Groups offer understanding and support to families that have been affected by a loved one’s alcoholism. Al-Anon Information Analyst, Pamela Walters said, “Local Al-Anon groups especially welcome parents during September National Recovery Month this year. Recent Al-Anon surveys indicate a steady increase in the number of members who come to Al-Anon because their children are having drinking problems."
“Families turn to Al-Anon Family Groups in times of desperation,” Walters said. “More parents are seeking help to deal with a son or daughter’s drinking problem. With widespread use of social media, it is easier for parents to find out what young people are doing, and it is more difficult for young people to keep alcoholism a secret.”
Erica is the mother of a 24-year-old daughter who has a serious drinking problem. Erica said, “My daughter has been in several abusive relationships. Twice they almost caused her to lose her life. In every bad thing that she encounters, drinking starts it. I’m so sad and hurt because I see the demise it causes in my household. Enough is enough!”
“A difficult hurdle for parents to overcome is the mistaken belief that somehow they caused their child’s drinking problem,” Walters said. “But alcoholism is a disease that no one can cause, control, or cure. Parents can learn from each other’s experience by participating in local Al-Anon groups.”
Al-Anon Family Groups are for families and friends who have been affected by a loved one’s drinking. Nearly 16,000 local groups meet throughout the U.S., Canada, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico every week. Al-Anon Family Groups meet in more than 130 countries, and Al-Anon literature is available in more than 40 languages. Al-Anon Family Groups have been offering strength and support to families and friends of problem drinkers since 1951. Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc. acts as the clearinghouse worldwide for inquiries from those who need help or want information about Al-Anon Family Groups and Alateen, its program for teenage members.
