Alelo Researchers Identify How to Properly Recruit and Retain Millennial Employees
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 29, 2015 -- Experts in cross-cultural communication at Alelo Inc. have identified the key factors and solutions that affect how to successfully recruit and retain Millennial employees.
Much of what is presented about these employment challenges are simple generalizations based on conjecture. As The Economist noted recently: “Companies are right to be exercised about the Millennial generation…But in their enthusiasm to embrace that generalization, they risk swallowing a lot of snake oil.”
In their new white paper Overcoming Cross-Generational Problems in the Workplace, Alelo’s researchers present research in social science and cross-cultural communication that inform how to properly understand and solve communication problems across generations in the workplace.
Dr. Lewis Johnson, CEO of Alelo, explains, “The foundation is to get past generational stereotypes and address the underlying issues of communication, cooperation, and a positive work culture.”
Dr. Asya Anderson, Alelo’s lead cultural anthropologist, explains that “Cross-generational miscommunication and misunderstandings are very similar to what arises when communicating across cultures. There is a common misconception that people’s abilities to promote good cross-cultural relationships are fixed and cannot be learned. The fact is that everyone from Baby Boomers to Gen Z can learn valuable new soft skills such as perspective taking, which is the ability to understand a situation from the perspectives of others.”
Millennials will exceed 50% of the workforce by 2020, making it critical to address these issues with some degree of urgency. Deborah Adams, manager of enterprise learning services at the International Paper Company, finds that it can take new employees a very long time to learn the ropes about their jobs and her company’s business and culture. “To meet our corporate goals while our older workers are retiring we must re-engineer how we recruit, on-board and retain promising young hires, and bring them to full productivity as quickly as possible,” she concludes.
