AlertSystems Comment On Decision To Remove CCTV In North Norfolk
(PRWEB UK) 10 October 2013 -- The BBC has reported on October 7 in the article ‘North Norfolk Council to Switch Off 46 CCTV Cameras in Towns’ that the CCTV coverage across five towns in the area will end from March 2014. The decision, which will affect Cromer, Fakenham, North Walsham, Sheringham and Wells, has been taken in a bid by the council to cut their budgets by over £1 million. The BBC reports that the CCTV security system, which consists of 46 cameras, can be managed by local town councils if they take the decision to do so. If the local councils decide to run the CCTV, the council will provide them with the necessary equipment to run the system effectively.
The decision to stop using CCTV in the North Norfolk towns is due to the towns not being considered high crime areas and in 2009, CCTV surveillance was reduced from 24 hours a day to 16 hours a day due to low crime rates.
North Norfolk Police Commander Superintendent Stuart Gunn told the BBC that:
“Public and commercial CCTV can be a useful additional tool in the prevention and detection of crime, and can provide reassurance to the public. We are aware of the North Norfolk District Council review of their CCTV service and will continue to liaise with them as they look at future options.”
As experts in business security systems, AlertSystems closely follow news in the industry. A spokesperson for the company offered their comments:
“With many councils taking the decision to remove CCTV cameras across towns, it is becoming more important that businesses install their own CCTV security systems in order to protect their premises, staff and members of the public. Even in low crime areas, CCTV can act as a crime preventative and can provide vital information to police in their investigations.”
