Algaecide and Nutrient Reduction Kits Introduced to Remedy Toxic Algae in Ponds
Rogers, MN (PRWEB) July 30, 2013 -- Lake Restoration, a pond and lake weed control company based in Rogers, MN, today announced that it has launched Mizzen™ Restore, a new Algaecide and Nutrient Reducer kit to control algae, including toxic algae. Mizzen™ Restore is designed to control both planktonic and filamentous algae and reduce algae fueling nutrients in ponds and lakes. It follows in the footsteps of its namesake Mizzen™ algaecide, a copper based algaecide launched by Lake Restoration in April 2013.
Algae can appear in different forms and different colors, and it is often hard to tell if it is safe or toxic. Eyeballing an algal bloom isn’t exactly a scientific method for determining toxicity. One way to make a determination on the type of algae that you have is with a stick test. If you poke a stick into algae and it hangs on to the stick, is stringy and has texture, this will tell you that it is a filamentous algae and therefore likely safe. If it is does not hang on to the stick it could be harmful blue-green algae, the kind that has been linked to pet and livestock deaths from accidental consumption.
Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, looks like someone took a can of green paint and dumped it into a body of water. This bacteria can also be reddish-purple or even brown and is also known in the marine environment as “red tide.” Harmful algal blooms can decrease water quality, produce an awful odor or taste, and cause the production of algal toxins. While not all cyanobacteria algae are toxic, they can turn toxic quickly.
As summer temperatures rise, algae blooms can occur as frequently as every 10-14 days. With each algal bloom, it is very important to use a copper-based algaecide to keep algae and scum levels under control and prevent toxic algae from forming. The Mizzen™ Restore kit was designed to combat algae blooms and keep scum levels under control.
“Given how frequently algal blooms recur and the well-documented recent issues with toxic algae, we wanted to bring an affordable product to market so people can keep their family and pets safe,” says Mary Jo Furman, Retail Sales Supervisor at Lake Restoration. “Mizzen™ Restore enables our customers to control algae and scum issues with minimal effort.”
Mizzen™ Restore is safe for use in fresh water lakes, ponds, potable water reservoirs, water gardens, irrigation ditches and many other bodies of water and can help control all types of planktonic and filamentous algae and chara. Kits start at $16.75 for 2,500 square feet of coverage and scale up to 8 acres of coverage.
