All About Learning Press, Inc. Introduces New “Story Behind the Story” Blog Series

The first post in the new series explains the background of the short story “A Haircut for Britches,” which appears in the Shipwreck! reader in Level 3 of All About Reading.
“In this decodable story, readers find out what happens when Britches the sheep manages to hide from the farmer to avoid getting sheared,” says Marie Rippel, curriculum developer at All About Learning Press, Inc. “We wanted readers to be able to see firsthand what sheep shearing is all about, so we visited a local farm during their annual sheep shearing and took a few pictures of the action. According to Rippel, the term “decodable books” is sometimes used to refer to texts in which at least half the words are decodable, but being able to decode only half the words in a book is very frustrating for most students. “Truly decodable books are 100 percent decodable so the student is able to read every word,” says Rippel. “When a child reads a fully decodable book, he can use his knowledge of phonics and his word analysis skills to decode unfamiliar words. Because the child can figure out every word in the book, he feels successful, which in turn helps him build fluency and develop good reading strategies.”
