Allsup Awards Disability Literacy Grant to Brain Injury Alliance of Washington
Belleville, Ill (PRWEB) January 15, 2015 -- Allsup, a nationwide Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) representation company, awarded Seattle-based Brain Injury Alliance of Washington (BIAWA), a $2,500 grant for being the top Allsup Post for a PurposeSM blogger in 2014. The Allsup Post for a Purpose initiative increases disability literacy by promoting health observances, encouraging community participation and raising awareness and support of nonprofit organizations and their missions.
BIAWA's guest blog, Awareness, Support and Hope for Those with Brain Injury, garnered the most shares from Allsup's Facebook page in 2014, reflecting public interest in TBI and support of the nonprofit organization's programs.
"The disabilities resulting from traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be lifelong and life-changing, involving physical, emotional, behavioral and cognitive impairments," said Deborah Crawley, CBIS, BIAWA Executive Director.
Approximately 5.3 million Americans live with a TBI-related disability, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center reports that nearly 300,000 military service members sustained a TBI from 2000 through 2013.
According to the CDC, TBI can cause epilepsy and increase the risk for conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and other brain disorders that become more prevalent with age.
Individuals with TBI may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits if they are not able to continue working. For answers to specific questions about applying for SSDI, visit Expert.Allsup.com or call (888) 841-2126.
