Almost Everything Autobody Celebrates Fifth Year Partnering With California School for the Deaf
Fremont, CA (PRWEB) December 16, 2013 -- Almost Everything Autobody recently celebrated its fifth year partnering with California School for the Deaf.
Almost Everything sponsors semester-long internships, and have had eight student interns since 2009. Interns learn what work environment is really like. They sweep and clean up, but also learn to sand, mask and detail cars, as they are typically interested in the automotive field. Some have even studied auto body repairs at school. Interns have been both boys and girls. So far, one internship has led to full time employment.
"It's fun to work here because it is fast paced, friendly, there's a small, close-knit crew," said Joel Palmon, Almost Everything's customer service manager.
Palmon thinks the interns like "to work with their hands in real life shop--work on real cars with real results when they are finished, all the while making friends and references for the future.”
“And I shouldn't say this, but they get to get out of school for a few hours every day," he said.
"In high school I couldn't get enough of cars,” said Frank Barnard, Almost Everything's general manager. “Right now we are working on a Mercedes CLK 430, a 1970 Pontiac GTO and a '71 VW Bus that we are restoring, a Mustang, an Eclipse, a Celica, a Subaru WRX and a Land Cruiser. Next week everything will be different. It's a constant parade of great vehicles. The interns help us too. It has been interesting to learn how much of our normal communication in a loud shop is non-verbal. We were a little astonished when we first started working with deaf interns. There wasn't as much communication gap as we expected. We learned that we were already using a lot of our own, improvised sign language and body signals. The deaf students have helped us expand and improve this communication. The internship program also helps us refine and develop our processes and training materials. Each student approaches the job in a slightly different way and helps us identify weaknesses and opportunities. The program has been a great success. We're looking to many more years working with the School for the Deaf."
