Alzheimer Study Prompts Renee’s Readers to Donate Reading Glasses to San Diego Geriatric Clinic
New City, New York (PRWEB) August 05, 2014 -- According to a recent study in the American Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease & Other Dementias, reading glasses help improve geriatric patients’ general well-being and may prevent delirium by keeping them more connected. Unfortunately, the importance of having basic reading glasses readily available is generally unrecognized. In a hospital setting that is already overwhelming and where the elderly often become confused, not having their reading glasses with them disorients them even further to where they cannot even explain that they can’t see. The research in “The Value and Underutilization of Simple Reading Glasses in Geropsychiatry Inpatient Settings” published June 13, 2014 finds that reading glasses should be considered a staple to hospital supplies. Moved by this study, Renee’s Readers quickly packed up an assortment of reading glasses for donation. “When I read the Alzheimer study by Dr. Shawn Barnes and Dr. Daniel Sewell, I immediately knew that I had to help in some way,” said Renee Bachner, founder of ReneesReaders.Com. “So I shipped some of my readers to the Gifford Clinic in San Diego where Dr. Barnes works."
Renee Bachner has supported the Alzheimer's Association since launching her business in 2012 by donating from each sale made to Alzheimer's research and support services. This cause remains close to her heart. Her mother had Alzheimer’s as do so many of the friends and family members of her optical store customers. This was also one of the contributing factors behind her launching Renee’s Readers.
“One of the things my mother loved to do was to read the newspaper. We had it delivered to her house. She read it every day; it gave her purpose and kept her engaged; she loved to discuss everything she read,” remembers Renee. “After taking care of my elderly parents for several years, one of the things I learned was that simple things that are taken for granted when we are young, give the greatest pleasure when you are elderly, which includes something so basic as being able to read a newspaper.”
