Amber Eyeglasses are Helping Thousands of People Sleep Better

Surprising as it may seem, a major discovery about the functioning of the eye was not discovered until this century. The discovery was that some of the light sensors in the retina have nothing to do with vision. Their function is to control the internal (circadian) clock. The nerve fibers from these sensors, called ganglion cells, don’t go to the visual cortex of the brain but rather go to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (part of the hypothalamus), which controls the pineal gland. The pineal gland produces melatonin, the sleep hormone. These special sensors are different from the rods and cones that produce vision. They respond most strongly to blue light. Exposing the eyes to the blue rays in ordinary white artificial light in the evening prevents the pineal gland from producing melatonin. Wearing the amber glasses that eliminate the blue rays allows the body to produce melatonin just like it did before we had electric lights.
