American Family Care Works to Raise Awareness and Funds Through Support of ‘Be The Match’
Birmingham, Alabama (PRWEB) August 06, 2015 -- American Family Care (AFC), the nation’s leading provider of urgent care and accessible primary care, is a proud sponsor of Game, Set, Be The Match. The adult charity USTA tennis tournament is set for August 20 through August 23 at Greystone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham.
The inspiration for the tournament comes from one member’s daughter, Taylor. She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2011. After enduring six rounds of chemotherapy, doctors recommended a bone marrow transplant to increase her chances of staying cancer free. Be The Match®, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP), found Taylor's perfect match.
“As a company completely dedicated to health, sponsoring such a tournament to raise awareness about the need for more bone marrow donors is perfectly aligned with our core values,” says D. Bruce Irwin, M.D., founder and CEO of AFC. “Taylor’s story shows the need for donors – and how every one of us can help save a life.”
More than 70% of patients do not have a match in their family and rely on the generosity of people who participate in the Be the Match registry. Patients are most likely to match someone of their own race or ethnicity. Since defeating cancer, Taylor returned to work, got married and celebrated the birth of her daughter.
Birmingham area residents who are between ages 18 and 44 and meet health guidelines can register with Be the Match via a simple cheek swab during the tournament. All proceeds from the four-day tournament will help add more participants to the Registry, provide patient assistance and fund live-saving research.
