American Physician Partners, NorthCrest Medical Center Lower Sepsis Rates
Brentwood, Tennessee (PRWEB) October 03, 2017 -- American Physician Partners (APP), a provider of outsourced ED management services, and NorthCrest Medical Center have achieved a quality milestone of improving sepsis measures for the 109-bed facility in Springfield TN.
NorthCrest contracted with APP in June 2017 to resolve ED physician staffing issues, improve patient satisfaction and boost quality scores. In terms of quality measures, APP immediately focused on Sepsis and Behavioral Health measures.
“Sepsis is a hospital-wide issue, but everything is initiated in the emergency department,” says Randy Davis, president and chief executive officer for NorthCrest. “It’s where you see misses on a number of sepsis-related care issues. APP took on the mission to improve care coordination and communication between the ED and the hospitalists and helped us raise our sepsis scores dramatically.”
Within a month, NorthCrest’s sepsis core measures have increased from 60 percent to 100 percent through a collaborative effort and proprietary processes developed by APP.
“I serve on numerous state level quality committees and I rarely see anyone reaching the 50 percent mark, and never 100 percent,” says Davis. “APP has a maturity in their approach that says ‘we’re here to be good partners and practice good medicine.’ It’s that kind of attitude that propelled NorthCrest to succeed on the sepsis scores.”
Sepsis occurs when a patient’s immune response to infection goes haywire and triggers widespread inflammation that results in severe tissue damage. Today, it conservatively accounts for 5 percent of all acute spending annually ($20.3 billion annually and $55.6 million daily). It’s a major driver of readmissions. By most estimates, it adds $3.1 billion annually to readmissions costs.
“The ED is the front door to the hospital,” says John Rutledge, chief executive officer. “Our collaborative approach to patient-centered care benefits the existing staff, physicians and the community and allows us to help tackle issues like sepsis, and we’re pleased to see the results it has achieved for NorthCrest.”
