American Sleep Association Commences Sleep Apnea Awareness Week on October 6, 2014
Lancaster, PA (PRWEB) September 30, 2014 -- The American Sleep Association is preparing for Sleep Apnea Awareness Week 2014, a national event focused on increasing public awareness about this potentially deadly sleep disorder. The event this year will occur during October 6 -13, 2014.
Members and affiliates of the American Sleep Association (ASA) from around the world will be participating in the event. Affiliated sleep disorder treatment centers will discuss topics relating to sleep apnea with local media and the general public. The website, http://www.SleepApneaAwarenessWeek.com , initiated by the ASA, will host important information on the signs, symptoms, risks, and treatment option of sleep apnea.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder characterized by frequent episodes of pauses in breathing caused by a temporary obstruction of the airway. Over 5% of adults suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. Over 1% of children are affected. Most individuals affected by the disorder are not diagnosed. Undiagnosed sleep apnea patients have an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, motor vehicle accidents, and deadly heart rhythms.
If sleep apnea is suspected, signs and symptoms should be discussed with the individual’s physician. A sleep study is used to make the diagnosis. This can be done in a sleep center or by a home sleep test.
Treatment options for the disorder include CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), weight loss, oral appliance device, and oral airway surgery.
Treated individuals often feel more alert and refreshed, and reduce the complications of obstructive sleep apnea.
