American Stamp Dealers Association Celebrates 100th Anniversary at National Postage Stamp Show in New York City
(PRWEB) October 04, 2014 -- Ushering in its 65th Annual National Postage Stamp Show, the American Stamp Dealers Association will unveil a new era in its fall New York event with an array of “firsts”. The show is scheduled for October 23 - 26 at the New York Hilton Hotel at 1335 Avenue of the Americas. Admission is free.
For the first time in over 20 years, the NPSS moves to midtown Manhattan in the ballroom of one of the city’s best known hotels. The event celebrates the 100th anniversary of the ASDA. An enlarged special edition of the organization’s national magazine, The American Stamp Dealer & Collector will be distributed to everyone who attends the show and will feature the 16-page show program in a special center section.
“Our chief goal in producing this historic edition of our annual fall show is to not only celebrate an important anniversary in our hobby, but to show off the excitement and vigorous health of our hobby,” said Mark Reasoner, president of the ASDA. “We are especially proud to introduce a unique kind of competitive international philatelic exhibition which, we trust, will set a serious precedent for the future."
The U.S. Postal Service will issue its annual set of American holiday stamps at the show—with first day of issue ceremonies scheduled for 11:00 am, Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Hilton.
The United Nations Postal Administration and the Postal Service of Grenada will issue special postally valid souvenir sheets in honor of the ASDA anniversary. The U.N. first day ceremony is set for 1:30 pm, Thursday, Oct. 23, and the Grenada ceremony scheduled for 1:30 pm the next day, Friday, Oct. 24th.
A key highlight of the show is the precedent-setting international philatelic exhibition consisting of 234 frames of major national and international gold medal exhibits which will test their competitive potential in preparation for World Stamp Expo NY2016 to be held in New York City in two years. Exhibits chairman Stanley Piller has gathered a high-level group of 37 exhibits that should appeal to a cross section of show goers, including Gordon Eubanks’ 2014 Champion of Champions winning exhibit, The United States Issues of 1851-1856 & Their Importance in an Expanding Postal System; Van Siegling’s The Magical World of Harry Potter; and Ed Bergen’s, Walt Disney’s First Superstar—Mickey Mouse. The awards for this competition are unique to philatelic exhibitions anywhere. They consist of various denominations of specially-mounted actual United States gold coins minted in 1914, the year the ASDA was founded. The awards dinner will be held on Saturday evening at the Scaletto Ristorante at 50 West 77th Street.
Tickets will be available at the ASDA booth on the show floor.
The Daniel F. Kelleher firm, official auctioneer of the show, will conduct three major auctions at the show taking place on all four days of the event. Pre-auction viewing of lots will take place at their booth and catalogs for the auctions will be distributed to potential bidders.
The international bourse for the NPSS will feature over 50 booths of dealers from the U.S. and other countries. It represents the largest bourse at a fall ASDA show since the 1990s. In addition, philatelic societies will have booths at the show, including the American Philatelic Society, the Ebony Society of Philatelic Events & Reflections, Machine Cancel Society, and the Postmark Collectors Club.
A special Kids Activities Area will be offered for youngsters attending the event and will feature a free “My Stamp Album” given to all young people who participate. An unusual souvenir card will be offered by the ASDA at the show. Designed especially for this historic occasion by Jim Roselle, professional graphic artist and president of Colorano Silk Cachets, it follows a show souvenir tradition set in 1949 when the American Stamp Dealers Association’s National Postage Stamp Show was founded. It will be available at the ASDA booth for $5.00 for the mint souvenir card—$7.50 for the souvenir card with a block of four of the USPS Holiday Stamps postmarked with the show cancel.
In addition to the preceding activities, a number of philatelic seminars and meetings will be held during the show.
