Americans Believe Economy Should Be The Top Priority For 21st Century U.S. Presidents In a New Presidential Poll
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 15, 2015 -- The American public believes the top priority for U.S. presidents in the 21st Century should be economic growth and stability, according to a new Presidents Day poll commissioned by the community service organization Fraternal Order of Eagles. Stewardship of the economy was selected by over 39% of respondents. Other priorities that resonated with the 630 poll participants included national security (22%) and reigning in Washington spending (14%). Addressing climate change, poverty and global leadership all registered at 5% or lower. The survey was conducted online on February 12 by Luntz Global and has a margin of error of 3.9%.
Participants were specifically asked, “Which of the following do you think should be the TOP PRIORITY for presidents in the 21st century?” The eight polling options included economic growth and stability, national security, reigning in Washington spending, working well with Congress, addressing climate change, addressing poverty, global leadership and reforming and making entitlements sustainable.
An apolitical, non-profit organization, the Fraternal Order of Eagles counts seven past U.S. presidents among its membership ranks (Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan). The Eagles have worked from the grassroots to presidential and congressional leadership levels on a host of social programs to help the less fortunate, including Social Security, Medicare, anti-age discrimination and workmen’s compensation, along with the establishment of Mother’s Day as a national observance.
President Franklin Roosevelt recognized their contribution to the passing of the Social Security act in 1935. “I have long observed with satisfaction the sponsorship by the Eagles of social justice legislation both in the states and in the nation,” President Roosevelt said upon signing the act. “These effects have borne, and are bearing, gratifying results. Our countrymen owe the Eagles good will for their unselfish services.”
Established in 1898, the Fraternal Order of Eagles is made up of 800,000 members based in over 1,600 chapters (“aeries”) and 1,400 women’s auxiliaries. They have played a prominent role on a broad array of social and philanthropic causes. The organization raises in excess of $100 million each year to benefit local communities and charities and support medical research and treatment on a host of conditions including research in areas such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and cancer. Most recently, the organization established and endowed The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa, a state-of-the-art medical research facility, dedicated to the prevention and potential eradication of diabetes.
