Americans with Disabilities Act Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) March 16, 2015 -- To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the historic passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the second leg of the ADA Legacy Tour kicked off in Texas. Events included a stop at the Bob Bullock State History Museum and a March to the State Capitol in Austin.

As President Obama remarked about the original Selma marchers in his address at the 50th anniversary March across the Pettus Bridge, "Because of what they did, the doors of opportunity swung open not just for black folks, but for every American. Women marched through those doors. Latinos marched through those doors. Asian Americans, gay Americans, Americans with disabilities -- they all came through those doors."

The ADA Legacy Tour is a traveling exhibit designed to raise public awareness and generate excitement about ADA25 and is produced by The ADA Legacy Project, Disability Rights Center, ADA National Network, and the Museum of disABILITY History. Launched at the Abilities Expo Houston on July 25-27, 2014, the year long tour will culminate in Washington, D.C., on July 26, 2015, exactly 25 years after President George H.W. Bush signed the ADA into law. The tour will visit nearly 60 cities along the way. See the complete list of 2015 Tour Stop Dates and Locations.

The ADA Legacy Tour features the ADA Bus, displays highlighting photographer Tom Olin’s iconic photos and milestones in the disability rights movement, the ADA Pledge, and, related materials.

“The ADA is an integral part of our nation’s civil rights journey,” said Mark Johnson, Director of Advocacy at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. "In fact, disability rights are featured in the new National Center for Civil and Human Rights.”

While the bus is no longer able to take requests for additional Tour stops before the July 26 celebration in Washington, D.C., you can still see and support The ADA Legacy Tour in several ways:
