Ventura, CA (PRWEB) June 17, 2016 -- Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast (GSCCC), with the support of a $15,000 grant from the Amgen Foundation, today announced the launch of this summer’s “Girl Scouts Forever Green Program,” which provides STEAM, (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) activities focusing on water conservation. The “Girl Scouts Forever Green Program” is a global effort encouraging girls to take action to improve the environment and protect natural resources. The program utilizes online curriculum and resources, do-it-yourself STEAM kits, and a strong network of STEAM-related volunteer and community support.
“We are very excited to have received this grant from the Amgen Foundation,” said Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast CEO Gina Jaeger. “This program is enabling 1,300 Ventura County girls to participate in the ‘Girl Scouts Forever Green Program’ and will help promote a life-long curiosity for science, technology and conservation issues.”
The goal of the “Girl Scouts Forever Green Program” is to educate and inspire girls living in Ventura County to protect water as a critical resource. Girls will have the opportunity to explore and engage in STEAM activities through an inquiry-based delivery model focused on experiential, water conservation curriculum and resources. This grant is helping to develop and launch the new curriculum including an online Forever Green Water Conservation patch program. This summer, Ventura County Girl Scouts will receive a do-it-yourself and online patch program information guide. They may also participate in water conservation curriculum through “Girl Scouts on the Go,” a mobile delivery model created to bring STEAM programs directly to community events and individual troops.
On Saturday, May 7, GSCCC presented their first annual adult STEAM open house at the Arnaz Program Center. Troop leaders and adult volunteers learned about providing STEAM activities and opportunities to girls, including simple and affordable take-away activities. The open house event welcomed volunteers to investigate individual discipline booths including: physics, biology, chemistry, electricity and a host of other STEAM-related activities designed to inspire, motivate and provide an opportunity for girls to develop hands-on experience with science and technology. GSCCC plans to continue providing STEAM training to troop leaders and adult volunteers to make scientific discovery and engagement accessible to girls in all six counties served by the council.
