Amica Shares Tips to Help Prevent, Spot Impaired Driving
LINCOLN, R.I. (PRWEB) December 20, 2016 -- Many holiday memories come from family gatherings, company parties and reuniting with friends. But these celebrations should take place in a secure environment with responsible hosts, so Amica Insurance is sharing tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, two out of three people will be involved in a drunk-driving crash in their lifetimes. Amica is sharing these tips from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to encourage the safe hosting of holiday celebrations:
• Have nonalcoholic options or “mocktails” available for guests who don’t want to drink alcohol.
• If planning to serve alcoholic punch, use fruit juice or other noncarbonated bases. Alcohol is absorbed into the blood faster if it’s combined with a carbonated base.
• Provide plenty of food to keep guests from drinking on an empty stomach.
• Playing games is a great way to keep guests entertained so that they limit their alcohol consumption.
• Everyone in attendance should designate a driver who has not been drinking.
• Have the phone number of a taxi company available for anyone who needs a ride, or offer guests who have been drinking to stay overnight.
Alcohol isn’t the only problem, however. Drugs, even those prescribed by a physician, can impair a driver’s judgment and driving ability. MADD is sharing the following signs that a driver may be impaired:
• Quick acceleration or deceleration
• Erratic breaking
• Driving with headlights off at night
• Drifting in and out of lanes
• Swerving
• Slow response to traffic signals
• Signaling that is inconsistent with actions, like a left turn with the flashing of a right directional light
If someone appears to be impaired, take down the license plate number, make, model and color of the vehicle. Pull over to a safe area and call 911 to alert the police.
