angama Health™ Smart Digital Assistant Melza™ to leverage Artificial Intelligence in helping Physicians and their Patients get Access to Medications, for Better Therapy
AI Helps Doctors Get Patients Medication
ATLANTA, Sept. 26, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Today at the Health Connect South 2019 Conference (Event Web URL: https://healthconnectsouth.com/), angama Health™ announced its participation in Georgia Tech's Advance Technology Development Center (ATDC) Incubator Accelerate Program. The startup intends to utilize the available artificial intelligence expertise and resources, for commercializing its Smart Digital Assistant, Melza™ to minimize physician and patient access friction to specialty/branded medications, to enable providing more effective therapy.
- 92% of physicians reported the prior-authorization process required by health plans, to get approval to prescribe specialty/branded medications is having a negative impact on patients' clinical outcomes, according to an American Medical Association survey.
- Annually, about 75 million prescriptions are abandoned due to prior-authorization friction.
- By 2020, the prior-authorization rejection rate is forecast to be ~50% on specialty/branded medications.
As the prior-authorization clinical appeal process for prescriptions is so cumbersome, about four out five physicians change their prescription recommendation at least once, according to a Frost & Sullivan white paper, to avoid the hassle of doing a clinical appeal. They then have that uncomfortable conversation with their patients, stating the health plan was unwilling to pay for their preferred medication, so they are changing the prescription to what the health plan suggests it will cover, which can result in delaying patient recovery.
"I had one such uncomfortable conversation with a family member's doctor, which inspired me to create Melza™, making it easier to submit prior-authorization clinical appeals to health plans and get approval for physicians preferred medication regimen, to obtain better treatment outcomes for patients," said Marlon Parris, Founder and CEO at angama Health™. "The angama Health™ team will be able to benefit from collaborating with multi-discipline experts, at the university's recently opened machine learning center," said Jane McCracken, Assistant Director at Georgia Tech's ATDC Incubator.

"Resulting in the best available treatment and best outcomes for patients."
