Angel Taveras, Greenberg Traurig Attorney and Former Providence, RI Mayor, Elected to the Board of the Alliance for Early Success
Boston (PRWEB) August 24, 2015 -- Angel Taveras, a shareholder in Greenberg Traurig LLP’s Boston office and former Providence, Rhode Island mayor, was elected to the Board of the Alliance for Early Success (the Alliance), a nonprofit organization that works to advance state policies for young children. Taveras was elected during the Alliance’s annual board meeting, Aug.12 in San Francisco.
Taveras’ position on the Alliance Board serves as an extension of his continuous commitment to education. Under his previous leadership as mayor, the city of Providence was recognized with the All-America City Award from the National Civic League for its plan to boost third-grade reading proficiency. In addition, Taveras won Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Mayors Challenge $5 million grand prize for his innovative proposal to improve the vocabularies of pre-school age children.
The Alliance is a catalyst for bringing state, national, and funding partners together to improve state policies for children, starting at birth and continuing through age eight. Its unique framework targets three essential areas required for the healthy growth and development of young, vulnerable children: health, family support, and learning. The Alliance advances effective advocacy and informs smart policies through partnerships, pooling funding, and experienced leadership.
Founded by the Buffett Early Childhood Fund, the Alliance currently has 11 investors, including W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Irving Harris Foundation, David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Heising-Simons Foundation, Annie E. Casey Foundation, JB and MK Pritzker Family Foundation, The George Kaiser Family Foundation, The Goldman Family Foundation, and one anonymous donor. The Alliance is currently providing funding and additional supports in over 25 states and to 26 national expert technical assistance organizations to improve state policies for young children. The Alliance will celebrate its 10-year anniversary at the annual Partner Summit in November, in the Alliance’s birthplace of Omaha, Nebraska.
