Anima & Animus in Popular Music with Dr. Dennis Merritt, the Asheville Jung Center will Host This Live Webinar from the Chicago Jung Institute on Saturday 11/9/13
Asheville, NC (PRWEB) October 31, 2013 -- The Asheville Jung Center is very excited to host Anima and Animus in Popular Music on November 16th at 11AM ET live from the Chicago Jung Institute. Music is arguably the most psychically evocative of the arts, and popular music expresses psyche in a particularly raw and undiluted way. This presentation will focus on hearing and reflecting on a number of examples of popular music (Cohen, Dylan, Righteous Brothers, Ronstadt, Cline, Prine, etc.) with the goal of experiencing and beginning to understand how the soul manifests in them. Jung called the inner feminine in a man (anima) and the inner masculine inner masculine in a woman (animus) the archetype of the soul, easily recognized in the songs in popular culture. This seminar will explore the songs of the late sixties and the ways they captured and formed the zeitgeist of the period and presented the emergence of soul images still alive today. John Prine’s “In Spite of Ourselves” (1999) provides an excellent example of a working class anima and animus. Different covers of a song generate different impressions about the meaning of that song. The Asheville Jung Center was founded in 2008 to advance the psychology of Carl Jung and promote an international Jungian community. It is affiliated with innerQuest Psychiatry and Counseling, a regional psychiatrist group.
Dennis Merritt, Ph.D., LCSW has an MA in Humanistic Psychology, a PhD in Insect Pathology from UC-Berkeley, and is a graduate of the Zurich Jung Institute. He practices as a Jungian analyst, sandplay therapist, and ecopsychologist in Madison and Milwaukee, WI. He authored four volumes of The Dairy Farmer’s Guide to the Universe—Jung, Hermes, and Ecopsychology.
