(PRWEB) May 09, 2014 -- A thirteenth chord is the stacking of six (major or minor) thirds, the last being above the 11th of an eleventh chord. Thus, a thirteenth chord is a tertian (built from thirds) chord containing the interval of a thirteenth, and is an extended chord if it includes the ninth and/or the eleventh.

“Most of you are used to playing 7th chords,” says Darville, “but you should also start incorporating the 13th”. The example that Jacques teaches is in the key of A and consists of the Root, 7th, 3rd and the 13th. Jacques demonstrates how to play this chord voicing as follows; 5th fret of the 6th string with first finger, allowing first finger to mute the 5th string, 5th fret 4th string with 2nd finger, 6th fret of the 3rd string with 3rd finger and 7th fret of the 2nd string with 4th finger, muting the first string.

Jacques says that you can make it an A13add9 chord by barring your 4th finger across the first and 2nd strings, which will add the 9th degree of the scale, B. “This is obviously a moveable chord voicing,” says Darville.
