(PRWEB) December 13, 2013 -- In this guitar lesson, now available on YouTube.com, Claude Johnson teaches 9th and 13th chords.
In a previous video lesson, Johnson taught using Dominant 7th chords for blues guitar, in this lesson he takes it to the next step by introducing 9th and 13th chords.
To construct the 9th and 13th chord voicing’s you start off with a 7th chord; root, 3rd, 5th, & flat 7, and then you add either the 9th and/or 13th.
Claude uses a 1-4-5 chord progression in the key of A for this lesson and uses A7 for the one chord of the progression. He starts off by demonstrating D9, the 4 chord of the progression by placing his middle finger on the 5th fret of the 5th string, first finger on the 4th fret of the 4th string, third finger on the 5th fret of the 3rd string, and 4th finger on the 5th fret of the 2nd string. “This is a little bit more of a sophisticated sound than just your normal D7,” says Johnson. Claude explains that if you flatten your 4th finger across the first string at the 5th fret as well its still D9, but if you move your 4th finger up one whole step to the 7th fret it becomes D13.
Johnson goes on to explain the music theory of how this works by demonstrating counting the notes of the Major Scale. Next Claude demonstrates the chord he is using for the 5 chord of the progression, E#9, by simply moving the shape he did for D9 up one whole step and moving his 4th finger up one fret to sharpen the 9. This chord was used a lot by Jimi Hendrix in songs such as Purple Haze and Foxy Lady. Claude finishes off the lesson with an augmented chord which consists root, 3rd, and #5.
