An arpeggio is when the notes of a chord are played separately in a sequence. The word comes from the Italian word apeggiare which means “to play on a harp.”
Claude starts off by explaining what an arpeggio is and plays A minor which is root, flat third, & fifth, the notes are A-C-E. He explains that this is a simplified way to do this and not complicated like the shapes used for sweep picking. He is able to play those three notes inside the sequence of the notes in the minor pentatonic scale which makes it easy to make licks out of. The sequence he uses consists of his fourth finger on the 9th fret of the first string which is the minor 3rd “C”, his first finger on the 5th fret of the first string which is the root note “A”, and his first finger on the 5th fret of the second string which is the fifth “E”. Next Johnson adds the 9th fret of the second string with his fourth finger which is the note G, the flat 7, which has made the arpeggio into Am7. So by simple descending the last four notes of the minor pentatonic scale you get the Am7 arpeggio. “4 out of the 5 notes of minor pentatonic is a minor 7th arpeggio,” says Johnson. Claude goes on to talk about mixing this sequence in with other bluesy licks, Claude says “even though you are in the key of A minor you can play an A Major arpeggio,” he demonstrates doing this and mixing in the dominant 7th as well.
