Annual Seminar Hosted by Mr. Ticket's Amir Soleimanian Focuses on DUI Charges and Marijuana Legalization

For his latest seminar, Soleimanian chose to focus on how the legalization of medical marijuana in California has begun affecting traffic laws, particularly focusing on how drivers can be issued DUI tickets for driving under the influence of prescription drugs for which they've been given legal prescriptions. Like many other regulated prescription drugs, Soleimanian explained, marijuana can affect a person's ability to make decisions and to respond quickly in dangerous situations on the road. Having a prescription for marijuana -- or any drug, for that matter -- does not give a person permission to drive after consuming it.
“Cops are cracking down on people these days," Soleimanian stated. "People don’t understand that a marijuana DUI ticket has same sentencing process as an alcohol-related DUI ticket." The punishments for receiving a DUI ticket in California, either due to drug or alcohol consumption, can include up to three years of probation and mandatory substance abuse classes -- and that's just for a minor first offense.
“People need to be careful out on the road. You can't drive after smoking marijuana because it stays in your body for a few days. Even painkillers can stay in your body for up to ten hours, and sleeping pills remain in the system for about a day. Every pill and substance has its own effect on the body, and the time it takes for a substance to wear off can differ between substances and individuals."
Soleimanian and the legal experts at Mr. Ticket encourage all drivers to be aware that even though the holidays are over and the number of DUI tickets is likely to decrease, police officers are still closely monitoring drivers for impairment violations.
