AONN+ Granted Membership in the American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer
(PRWEB) June 22, 2015 -- The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators® (AONN+) is proud to announce that it has been granted membership in the American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer (CoC).
“It’s an honor to be selected for Commission on Cancer membership,” says Lillie Shockney, RN, BS, MAS, program director of AONN+. “As a CoC member, we look forward to joining forces with some of the nation’s foremost oncology organizations to help write and implement policy that ensures patients have access to the highest standard of care available for their cancer. This includes ensuring that there is a continued effort to elevate the navigation profession and its value to the care continuum.”
The multidisciplinary CoC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education and the monitoring of comprehensive quality of care. As a member of the CoC, AONN+ joins more than 50 other national, professional organizations involved in cancer care.
Shockney has been selected as commissioner of the CoC representing AONN+. In this role, she will serve on one of the CoC’s standing committees, participate in meetings and engage in other projects and tasks as appropriate.
“CoC membership has been a long-standing goal for AONN+,” says Pam Rattananont Ferris, MPH, chief operating officer of AONN+. “In addition to providing us with the opportunity to help guide healthcare policy, it lends credibility to AONN+ and the educational materials and activities that we provide to the navigation profession.”

This magazine addresses the issues that patients, their family members, and caregivers face every day in an easy-to-read format. Issues include interviews with patients with cancer, information on access to care, and articles on lifestyle topics such as nutrition, stress management, personal finance, and legal and employer issues. CONQUER also features patient stories that are nominated for the AONN+ HERO OF HOPE™ award, which will be presented at the AONN+ Annual Conference. All stories are compiled in a special issue of CONQUER at the end of the year.
