Aquila Group of Funds Hires Veteran Tax-Free Income Fund Manager
NEW YORK (PRWEB) March 21, 2018 -- Aquila Investment Management LLC (Aquila), adviser/administrator to the Aquila Group of Funds, has announced the hiring of Anthony (Tony) A. Tanner as a portfolio manager. As of March 7, he joined portfolio managers Todd Curtis, JT Thompson and Royden Durham as a member of the portfolio management teams of Aquila Tax-Free Trust of Arizona (AZTFX), Aquila Tax-Free Fund For Utah (UTAHX) and Aquila Churchill Tax-Free Fund of Kentucky (CHTFX).
Mr. Tanner is a 30-year veteran of financial services with over 20 years of buy-side industry experience managing fixed income and multi-asset class portfolios for mutual funds, institutions, and ultra-high net worth clients.
He is joining the team as Aquila’s long-time portfolio manager, Todd Curtis, plans to retire on April 30. To facilitate continuity of management, Mr. Curtis is transitioning his portfolio manager responsibilities to Mr. Tanner with a particular focus on Aquila Tax-Free Trust of Arizona, where Mr. Tanner will serve as lead manager. Aquila Tax-Free Trust of Arizona is designed specifically for residents of Arizona. The investment objective and principal investment strategy of the Fund will remain unchanged. After retiring, Mr. Curtis will continue in a consultant role with Aquila.

A 12-year resident of Arizona, Mr. Tanner has a strong understanding of the state’s municipal bond market and maintains extensive relationships with local financial professionals and investors. Mr. Tanner joins Aquila from BNY Melon Wealth Management where he was a senior portfolio manager responsible for developing, implementing and managing customized portfolios for high net worth families and institutions across Arizona.
Mr. Tanner initially built his expertise as a fixed income portfolio manager with a focus on the municipal bond market at the Rochester Division of Oppenheimer Funds, where he worked from 1991 to 2003. He managed and co-managed five funds which, at the time, represented $10 billion in combined assets based on various maturity and credit mandates. He further expanded his knowledge of credit markets and tax-free investing in subsequent years while working at a number of investment management organizations.
Mr. Tanner is also skilled in advisor and investor communications as a regular speaker and an author of research and analysis papers on topics ranging from macro-economic trends to fixed income market outlook and the implications of regulatory or tax policies on municipal bonds. He will work closely with Aquila’s regional sales managers and internal sales consultants as well as marketing communications staff in providing educational support and resources to financial professionals and their clients.
Mr. Tanner received an MBA in finance from the University of Rochester, Simon Business School, and a Bachelor’s degree in business from St. Louis University. He is a CFA Charterholder and a member of the CFA Institute and the Phoenix CFA Society.
The firm’s lineup of mutual funds includes seven municipal bond funds, equity fund Aquila Three Peaks Opportunity Growth Fund (ATGAX), and a high-yield income fund Aquila Three Peaks High Income Fund (ATPAX).
