The Druid Hills Tour of Homes & Gardens will celebrate its 46th year with seven elegant homes that feature renovation, restoration, and the work of master gardeners. Two of the homes featured on the tour this year include homes on Springdale Road.
• Susan Muller and Steve Budnick own 1209 Springdale Road. Built in 1920, this Italian Renaissance-style home retains much of its original configuration in which every room leads into another. Susan and Steve bought the house in 1996, invoking vision and love to characterize its renovation. The extensive gardens which provide four seasons of interest were also added by the owners, inspired by their time living in Charleston.
• Claudia and Jeffrey Keenan open their home to tourgoers on 1236 Springdale Road. An unassuming white cottage perched on the crest of a broad green lawn, this house opens expansively into a multitude of light-filled rooms. Built in the late 1920s, it was renovated with additions, including a second floor, in 2006. The present owners have filled it with a family collection of early American antiques and modern furnishings that resonate with mid-century and Shaker styles.
This year’s tour will also feature Emory Village as a stop for lunch, shopping, lectures, and more. A series of informational Bar Talks at Emory Village include:
• Frank Neely of Frank G. Neely Design Associates at Slice & Pint, Friday, May 2, 4:30 p.m.
• Eric King & Holly Brooks of King Landscaping LLC at Saba, Saturday, May 3, 5:30 p.m.
• Larry Bosarge of Southern Outdoor Construction & Design at Ink & Elm, Sunday, May 4, 4:30 p.m.
In partnership with Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, the tour will also offer an Artist & Pottery Market and open the Callanwolde home to tourgoers. Stop and shop, visit the onsite coffee shop and café, and tour the 27,000-square-foot Tudor Revival mansion built in 1920 for Charles Howard Candler, an heir to the Coca-Cola fortune.
The tour events take place Friday, May 2, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Saturday, May 3, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; and Sunday, May 4, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Callanwolde Artist & Pottery market events take place Friday, May 2, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; Saturday, May 3, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; and Sunday, May 4, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance on the website: druidhillstour.org. Proceeds from the tour and events benefit the Druid Hills neighborhood, which the noted landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted designed during the late 19th century. The neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places.
