Arcserve Highlights Top 5 Trends in Data Protection and What to Expect in 2016
Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) January 05, 2016 -- Simplification in data protection, highly publicized data failures, purpose-built appliances and acceptance of cloud-based applications were among the biggest trends impacting the data protection industry in 2015, according to year-end information from Arcserve, LLC.
Arcserve, a leading provider of backup and recovery software and services, today released a summary of 2015 industry trends and predictions for advancements that will have the biggest impact on end-users in 2016. Trends that dominated industry conversations in 2015 included:
1. Solution Simplicity: As organizations of all size increased their adoption of virtualization, comprehensive data protection solutions for hybrid environments became critical to reduce costs, risk of data loss and complexity. Unified solutions that combine sophisticated recovery capabilities with ease of use became a testament to the need for solution simplicity.
2. Highly Publicized Data Failures: Data failures and outages from leading global organizations resulted negatively on business profitability and consumer trust. As such, IT staffs were pressed to adhere to more rigorous recovery point objectives (RPOs) and recovery time objectives (RTOs), while providing proof for all stakeholders that their business-critical systems and applications are protected.
3. Advancements in Data Deduplication: Increasing amounts of data across all market segments resulted in organizations looking at different methods to manage skyrocketing storage capacity needs and the corresponding exorbitant price tag. Because of this, deduplication technology evolved from target to source-side, with source-side representing one of the more cutting-edge techniques. However, this evolution has, to a certain degree, caused confusion of what successful deduplication means. Varying methods offered by vendors make it difficult to similarly compare performance.
4. Evolution of Purpose-Built Backup Appliances (PBBA): The emergence of cloud-native appliances and simpler, more efficient systems for deduplication have underscored a generational evolution in the PBBA market. Levels of adoption have increased in combination with cloud deployments, and will continue to rise in the coming year.
5. Cloud for Data Protection: Cloud adoption grew and became a more widely accepted and established method of data protection and disaster recovery. Significant advancements in network bandwidth and lower costs made it a realistic data protection option for organizations of all size.
“The backup and recovery market is quickly transforming as end-users weather the perfect storm hitting their infrastructure and affecting the efficiency of their operations,” said Christophe Bertrand, Vice President of Product Marketing, Arcserve. “Challenges ranging from the use of multiple point solutions to strained resources will underscore a fundamental shift toward more measurability and a keen focus on recovery.”
Moving into 2016, vendors will need to offer solutions that protect a myriad of environments, coupled with capabilities that provide assured recovery and reduce data protection costs. Arcserve predicts the following trends will drive this evolution in the coming year:
1. Growth of Hybrid Solutions: Backup and recovery solutions that protect hybrid environments will increase in 2016, fueled by the availability of affordable cloud infrastructures that support long-term retention and disaster recovery services. Cloud-based Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) can offer significant cost advantages over traditional disaster recovery methods without sacrificing performance.
2. Advancements in Virtual System Data Protection: Advancements in virtual system data protection will continue, with noteworthy improvements for migration, monitoring, storage management and replication (on-premise to the cloud and cloud-to-cloud). As such, adoption of virtual systems will continue to rise as end users require support for mixed hypervisor environments. That said, many organizations will still require physical systems for core applications, performance and reliability.
3. Enterprises Look to the Cloud: The rise of cloud-based enterprise applications will be driven by the need to protect cloud-based enterprise data. As a result, backup and recovery solutions will adopt new features to protect cloud-based applications for long-term retention and compliance requirements of the organization.
4. Cost Control is King: Cost control measures will continue to drive end users to find ways to reduce data protection costs without sacrificing performance or increasing risk. Key means to reduce costs associated with long-term backup, retention and disaster recovery will be product consolidation, data reduction, WAN-optimization through deduplication and compression, and third party public clouds.
5. Tape Storage Plays a Critical Role in Data Protection: Contrary to popular belief, tape will still be a required means of high capacity, reliable and affordable long-term storage in certain retention cases. Innovations in media density, performance and reliability, coupled with a broader realization that data durability trumps just about every other form of business continuity challenge, will ensure tape has a place in the hybrid data center.
