“There is a lot of misinformation out there about what causes acne,” said Robert J. Casquejo, PA-C and owner of the Skin and Cancer Center of Scottsdale. “Some people think acne just comes from dirty skin and washing more often will cure it, and that’s simply not the case.”

Common causes of teen and pre-teen acne are the use of oil-based makeup, oil introduced to the pores by touching the face with the hands, using the wrong type of soap on the face, using the wrong type of over-the-counter acne treatment for the skin type or type of acne, stress and changes in hormone levels.

“The reasons for acne are many and varied,” Casquejo said, “but they are also treatable. Young people don’t have to live with uncontrolled acne. A great deal can be done to reduce and prevent acne breakouts.”
