Art on the Vine Selects Artists Nakeya Brown and Larry Cook for New Savage-Lewis Residency Program
WASHINGTON, DC (PRWEB) May 23, 2018 -- Art on the Vine is pleased to announce the selection of artists Nakeya Brown and Larry Cook for its new Savage-Lewis Residency. Inspired by the collaborative nature of artists Augusta Savage and Noman Lewis' time on Martha’s Vineyard, this residency supports two artists of color from distinct practices who will work both separately and collaboratively to create new artwork that will be featured at Art on the Vine’s fourth annual exhibition. The exhibition takes place at the distinguished Dr. Fisher House and Old Whaling Church in Edgartown, MA from Sunday, August 12th - Wednesday, August 15th.
Brown and Cook head to Martha's Vineyard in June to begin their four-week residency experience.

Larry Cook is a photographer and conceptual artist originally from Landover, Maryland. Cook received his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from The George Washington University in 2013. His work has been included in various group shows at Rush Arts Gallery (New York, NY 2018); The National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC 2017), and Galerie Myrtis (Baltimore, MD 2016). Cook has held solo exhibitions at the Walters Art Museum (Baltimore, MD 2013) and the Baltimore Museum of Art (Baltimore, MD 2016). He completed a fellowship at Hamiltonian Gallery and later became an artist-in-residence at the Washington Project for the Arts. He is a recipient of the MASC Individual Artist Grant and the Trawick Art Prize. Cook currently is a professor and coordinator of photography at Howard University.
A 2017 Snider Prize award winner, Nakeya Brown has generated a vast body of work that uses photography to explore the complexities of race, beauty politics, and gender. Originally from Santa Clara, CA, she received her Bachelor of Art from Rutgers University and her Master of Fine Arts from George Washington University. Her work has been featured nationally in recent solo exhibitions at the Catherine Eldman Gallery (Chicago, IL, 2017), the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art (Grand Rapids, MI, 2017), the Hamiltonian Gallery (Washington, DC, 2017) and The McKenna Museum of African American Art (New Orleans, LA, 2012); and in group exhibitions at the Eubie Blake Culture Center (Baltimore, MD, 2018) the Prince George’s African American Museum & Cultural Center (North Brentwood, MD, 2017), and the Woman Made Gallery (Chicago, IL 2016 & 2013), among several others. She has presented her work internationally at the Museum der bildenden Künste (Leipzig, Germany, 2018) and NOW Gallery (London, U.K., 2017). Brown’s work has been featured in New York Magazine, Dazed & Confused, The Fader, TIME, and Vice. Her work has been included in photography books Babe and Girl on Girl: Art and Photography in the Age of the Female Gaze. She lives and works in Maryland.
Art on the Vine presented by The Agora Culture is a three-day art exhibition highlighting contemporary multicultural artists and educational panels for new and seasoned collectors. Art on the Vine is one of the first major multicultural events that focuses solely on emerging and mid-career African-American artists and brings together art appreciators, collectors, up-and-coming artists, institutions, and the merely curious for this cultural explosion. This event introduces attendees to the next wave of important artists and provides access to their artwork before it becomes out of reach. A full list of participating artists will be announced soon.
