Each issue features an in-depth look at technical issues, international developments, and information about various new technologies and projects.
In the February 2016 issue, Clarion’s CEO, Geoffrey Peckham, contributes a featured column on safety label standards, “A Brief History of the ANSI Z535 Standards.”
“The ANSI Z535 standards were developed to provide much-needed guidance to those responsible for communicating visual safety messages in a way that makes them ‘stand out’ from all the other types of information people see on a daily basis,” says Peckham. “The overall goal of the six standards that make up ANSI Z535 is to define best practices for communicating safety so that accidents are avoided and people are better protected from harm.”
The article goes on to explain the history of the series of six ANSI Z535 standards – which stretches back many decades – and how the standards have developed to establish today’s current best practices in the field of safety communication in the United States.
Peckham serves as chair of both the ANSI Z535 Committee for Safety Signs and Colors and the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO Technical Committee 145 – Graphical Symbols. His credentials also include being selected as a member of the U.S. TAG to ISO/PC 283, an ISO committee writing a new standard, ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, which will, when finished, define global best practices for workplace safety. In addition, he is an active member of many industry-specific standards committees related to safety signs and labels for buildings, ships, machinery and products.
