Article on Mosquito Nets for Hernia Treatment Is a Laudable Example of Innovative Medicine for the Underserved, Notes Dr. Shirin Towfigh
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 28, 2015 -- According to an article published September 8th on Medical Xpress, a new study testing the efficacy of using mosquito netting in place of standard hernia mesh for surgeries in poor, underserved areas of the world shows promising results. According to the article, the use of mosquito netting in place of specifically designed mesh is not a new practice in countries where medical mesh is not available, but its safety had not yet been studied. After tracking hernia surgery patients for one year after surgery, the study coordinators determined that there were no significant difference in terms of complications between the group that had specially designed hernia mesh and mosquito mesh. According to Dr. Shirin Towfigh of the Beverly Hills Hernia Center, while this in no way means that doctors and patients in medically advanced nations such as the United States should abandon more advanced mesh solutions, it is a promising development for the thousands of hernia patients in poor countries who must forgo surgery simply because there is not an affordable solution.
Dr. Towfigh notes that a hernia can become dangerous if it goes untreated. And, according to the article, the frequency of untreated hernias is much higher than many would likely imagine in these countries. The article notes that only one percent of all male hernia patients in Uganda have surgery each year. It explains that, although specially designed hernia meshes may only cost 100 dollars in those countries, that amount of money can be completely out of reach for a large segment of the population.
Of course, Dr. Towfigh notes, the fact that using mosquito netting in place of mesh is a better solution than providing no treatment at all doesn’t mean that it should be used in lieu of proper mesh where it is available. Dr. Towfigh notes that the pursuit of new mesh technologies is essential to bring down the rate of complications that can be associated with surgery mesh, including infections or chronic pain. Dr. Towfigh explains that medical progress is about never settling on the idea that a certain number of complications are inevitable; it’s about pushing forward to develop the very best solutions so that medical providers can give the most patients, the best chance of a healthy future.
In addition to being an advocate and contributor to the well-being of hernia patients, Dr. Towfigh is also the head surgeon and hernia expert at the Beverly Hills Hernia Center.
