artnet Auctions presents Holiday Ephemera Sale
New York / Berlin (PRWEB) December 13, 2013 -- artnet Auctions is pleased to present the Holiday Ephemera Sale, a selection of exceptional and unusual art collectibles and one-of-a-kind objects. Featuring over 100 lots, from signed posters and dedicated memorabilia to quirky 3-D objects, this sale is a perfect source for memorable holiday gifts.
One of the sale’s highlights is a very rare, hand-signed impression of Andy Warhol's Lincoln Center Ticket—a large-scale movie ticket estimated at US$2,500 to 3,500. In 1968, while the owner of the piece was a student at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, TX, Warhol came to lecture and brought only about a dozen of his Lincoln Center prints with him, which he sold for US$50 each. He personally signed and gave one to the owner.
The sale also features other signed works by Warhol, including his famous 1965 S&H Green Stamps, estimated at US$10,000 to 12,000, as well as a full set of 10 signed announcement cards promoting the artist’s Myths portfolio, estimated at US$20,000 to 25,000. In addition, the sale features a selection of commercial objects signed by Warhol, including a store-bought can of Campbell’s soup, estimated at US$3,000 to 5,000, and a box of Brillo pads, estimated at US$7,000 to 10,000.
Also offered are five unique acetates from the artist’s studio that were used to create some of Warhol’s most well-known portraits, including jewelry designer Paloma Picasso (US$5,000 to 10,000), fashion designer Valentino (US$3,000 to 5,500), art collector Kimiko Powers (US$2,500 to 3,500), and rock ‘n’ roll sex symbol Mick Jagger (US$4,500 to 7,500).
This sale also features a number of sculptural multiples, including Vik Muniz’s Drunken Duel (1991), comprised of two model pistols and the artist's “set of instructions” for a duel, illustrating Muniz’s exploration of the philosophical ramifications of violence. Estimated at US$3,000 to 5,000, this is the only copy in existence that includes an extra, unpolished prototype gun.
Particularly perfect for the holidays is Damien Hirst’s Ho, Ho, Ho!, a Christmas greeting recalling the artist’s spot paintings (US$1,000 to 1,500), and Louise Bourgeois’ Je t’aime pillowcase (1994) commissioned by London’s Tate Gallery (US$2,500 to 4,000). Other artist-designed items include a handbag by Yayoi Kusama (Japanese, b.1929) decorated with cartoonish drawings (US$2,500 to 3,500) and a six-piece ceramic Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923–1997) dinnerware set glazed with his iconic Benday dots ($3,500 to 5,500).
The auction will include several unique drawings, including Damien Hirst’s humorous portrait of three drinkers (US$3,500 to 5,500) created by the artist at a bar at 4 a.m. when his reputation as “one of the world’s greatest artists” was challenged by the work’s subjects. The sale also includes two exaggeratedly saccharine sketches of flowers by Jeff Koons (American, b.1955) (US$2,000 to 2,500 each). Another unusual Koons item is his wedding announcement, with a photo by Annie Leibovitz (American, b.1949) of the artist and his former wife Illona Staller, the Hungarian porn star and Italian MP also known as La Cicciolina (US$1,500 to 2,500). This lot also includes the wedding menu.
An unusual addition to the sale is a pair of white tank tops designed by Keith Haring (American, 1958–1990) (US$1,500 to 2,500) to promote his first two “Party of Life” birthday parties at the Paradise Garage in New York in 1984 and 1985, each adorned with Haring’s playful figures and details about the party. The sale also includes an invitation to Haring’s Memorial Tribute at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (US$500 to 700), featuring his iconic Radiant Baby and Dancing Dog. Another unusual and evocative work being offered is Frank Stella’s No Smoking Sign, estimated at US$7,000 to 10,000. An impression of this work was displayed at the entrance to his solo show at Sperone Westwater in New York in 1999. The work set the tone for the entire exhibition, which was comprised of works that were inspired by smoke and the way it rises and drifts into the air.
The Holiday Ephemera Sale presents a special opportunity to acquire captivating and rare pieces to enhance a collection, or give as unforgettable gifts.
