New York / Berlin (PRWEB) July 02, 2014 -- artnet Auctions is thrilled to announce Hot Shots, a hand-picked selection of highly desirable photographs by blue-chip artists, including Sally Mann, Ansel Adams, Vik Muniz, Robert Mapplethorpe, Gregory Crewdson, Nick Brandt, Annie Leibovitz, and Edward Weston. Estimates range from US$5,000 to 60,000.
A highlight of the sale is a rare, unique ambrotype triptych by Sally Mann (American, b. 1951). This self-portrait, estimated at US$40,000 to 60,000, has never before come to auction. In 2006, Mann was badly injured in a horse-riding accident, and was bedridden for months. She was naturally drawn to use this time creatively, and began to take self-portraits of her damaged face and body using the 19th-century ambrotype process, which involves producing a wet-plate positive and printing it on a black glass plate. The specific process and particular period of these photographs make them highly significant within Mann’s prolific oeuvre.
The sale also features two highly sought-after gelatin silver prints by Ansel Adams (American, 1902–1984), including one of Adams’s most iconic images, Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico (1941), estimated at US$50,000 to 70,000. This serendipitous moment was captured while driving through the Chama River Valley; a church and cemetery near Hernandez, New Mexico, are illuminated by a brilliant moonrise. Estimated at US$30,000 to 40,000, Winter Sunrise, Sierra Nevada, from Lone Pine, California (1944), another of Adams’s most desirable photographs, captures the awe-inspiring mountain range, the snow-capped peaks bathed in morning sunlight.
Several of Vik Muniz’s works are also included in the sale, most notably Pastorales Tahitiennes, after Paul Gauguin (2005), estimated at US$50,000 to 60,000. From Muniz’s celebrated series Pictures of Pigment, this work reinterprets one of Gauguin’s most interesting themes: the culture of native Tahitians. Through his photographic re-contextualization of Gauguin’s famous painting, Muniz has created an ultra-playful homage to the artist.
