In the internal memo obtained by the Verge he says "It's no secret and the rest of the world talks about it every day. We lose core user after core user by not addressing simple trolling issues that they face every day."
Twitter has had a system in place to reduce bullying and harassment, but it’s just not effective and doesn’t work most of the time, according to NoBullying. The current system against bullying on twitter that is in place allows users to fill out a “report abuse” form or to report an actual account or tweet for harassment. While the buttons are available to use, the fact remains that even if an account is suspended, it takes a user two minutes to create another account with another handle to continue his/her trolling or abusing, NoBullying argues.
While Twitter’s CEO is to be commended for finally noticing the social network’s problem with bullying and abuse, it still remains that being bullied on Twitter happens to numerous people every single day, NoBullying asserts. All of the previous means lower self esteem for the teen, a tendency to rage and outbursts, withdrawing from social life and consequently withdraw from Twitter. Cyberbullying and online abuse affect lives and families every day.
So, should people deactivate Twitter accounts to escape being bullied on Twitter? Ciaran Connolly, Co Founder of NoBullying says “No one has to quit a social media platform they like because a troll decided to torment them. What needs to happen is for Twitter to start implementing serious actions against trolls and for teens and youths to learn how to stand up for themselves and hit the report abuse button again and again till the troll disappears.”
He added that parents and teachers should make a point to educate the younger generations about the sad outcome of neglecting one’s safety online and offline. According to Connolly, it is quite imperative to press for more firm laws condemning all acts of bullying and harassment on Twitter.
