New York, New York (PRWEB) December 15, 2014 -- As Mirena lawsuits (http://www.mirenalawsuit2014.com/) continue to move forward in courts around the U.S., Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes new data suggesting that it and other IUDs are becoming an increasingly-popular birth control choice for many young women. According to HealthDay News, a recent report published by the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics revealed that IUD use has nearly doubled in the last five years. From 2006 through 2010, just 3.5% of women chose to use Mirena or another IUD as their primary method of birth control. But between 2011 and 2013, the rate grew to 6.4%.*
The authors of the report attributed the growing popularity of IUDs to new guideline issued by major health organizations over the past several years that now recommend the device for younger women. For example, HealthDay News pointed out that the American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends IUDs as a first option for teen girls.
“The publication of this report comes as thousands of women are pursuing Mirena IUD lawsuits for serious complications they allegedly sustained due to its use. It is important that any young woman considering Mirena as her method of birth control be fully apprised of its potential risks,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free case evaluations to women who were allegedly harmed after their Mirena IUD spontaneously migrated from its proper position in the uterus.
Mirena IUD Lawsuits
The Mirena IUD was first cleared for sale by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000 as a method of birth control. In 2009, the agency expanded Mirena’s approved uses to include the prevention of heavy menstrual bleeding in women who wish to use an IUD as their primary method of birth control.** Later that same year, the FDA issued a Warning Letter to Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals after finding that one of the company’s Mirena promotions made misleading claims about the safety and efficacy of the IUD.
According to court documents, nearly 1,300 Mirena lawsuits are currently pending in New Jersey’s Bergen County Superior Court, where Bernstein Liebhard LLP is actively filing claims. (In Re: Mirena Litigation; Case No. 297) More than 1,000 additional lawsuits have been filed in a federal multidistrict litigation established in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York. (In re: Mirena IUD Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2434)
Court records indicate that all of these Mirena plaintiffs accuse Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals of failing to warn that the device might migrate even after being properly inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider, and point out that the product’s label only cautions that migration might occur if the uterus is perforated when the IUD is being implanted. They also claim that the company has a history of overstating the benefits purportedly associated with Mirena, and of downplaying the risk for serious complications.
Women who allegedly suffered serious injuries due to spontaneous Mirena migration may be entitled to take legal action against Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals.
