As Winter Storm Looms, AIA Offers Tips to Help Homeowners Be Prepared
Washington, DC (PRWEB) January 21, 2016 -- As the east coast prepares for a major snow storm, the American Insurance Association (AIA) is releasing its top ten tips to help homeowners prepare their homes and prevent weather-related damage and injury. Winter weather often creates dangerous conditions that can lead to house fires, frozen pipes and roof damage.
The following top tips can help homeowners be prepared.
- Set the temperature in homes and offices above 55 degrees.
- Ensure your structure is properly insulated and make sure windows and doors are well sealed.
- Check sinks, faucets and pipes (interior and exterior) for leaks and rust, if you suspect frozen pipes shut off water source.
- During periods of intensely cold temperatures, open the cabinets that enclose bathroom and kitchen pipes to allow air flow that will warm them.
- Do not use the furnace or boiler room for storage of boxes or papers.
- Keep back-up generators and portable grills outdoors and away from windows, doors and ventilation.
- Be in good, physical condition before attempting snow removal (Check with your doctor is possible).
- Remove snow early and often rather than trying to do it all at once and re-salt surfaces after every thaw and freeze.
- Rather than lifting and dumping snow, push it in order to avoid back injuries.
- Wear shoes or boots with aggressive tread to avoid slipping.
In the event that you have a claim, your insurer and agent stand ready to assist you as quickly as possible. Be sure to keep your insurance policy and contact information handy.
