Asheville School to host 2018 Project Connect Summer Conference
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (PRWEB) February 04, 2018 -- There is no doubt that the brief but influential life of Black Mountain College produced many of the 20th Century’s most famous artists—painters, writers, musicians, dancers, weavers, ceramicists, and photographers—while also providing a scaffolding on which to construct many of our current ideas pertaining to interdisciplinary studies - and the centrality of the arts in curriculum.
Come join the conversation at Project Connect’s three-day conference, Black Mountain College: An Interdisciplinary Experiment, held in June on the beautiful campus of Asheville School, in Asheville NC. Leading expert in the field, Mary Emma Harris, author of the seminal text, Black Mountain College and the Arts, will offer both a keynote address as well as a workshop: “BMC + Meaning in Contemporary Education.”
Dr. Katherine de Vos Devine, former director of The Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, will provide the second keynote. Her talk, entitled “The World’s Most Successful Failure: the Life Cycle of BMC,” will illuminate the very specific ways that Black Mountain College’s influence endures, despite remaining open only for 23 years.
Finally, choose from a variety of workshops and further explore these topics in small breakaway group discussions, as our team facilitators attempt to unpack the lessons that the short history of the legendary BMC offers and to explore how we might implement those applications in our own schools and classrooms.

ABOUT PROJECT CONNECT: Project Connect is a 3-day conference orchestrated by Asheville School every two years that brings educators from all over the country together to share knowledge and strategies in interdisciplinary studies. Through a partnership with the E.E. Ford Foundation, Project Connect seeks to help teachers and schools start, sustain, and strengthen interdisciplinary initiatives in order to equip students with the higher order skills (critical thinking, problem solving, analytical reasoning, and written communication) they will need to succeed in college and in life.
