Asons Solicitors Comment on Tameside Hospital Being Put on “Special Measures” After Patients Being Allegedly “Placed at Risk”
Bolton, UK (PRWEB UK) 22 July 2013 -- In an article by the Manchester Evening News, it has been reported that senior management at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester have been ordered to take immediate action to make changes that ensure there is no risk to patient safety, after the “shocking” report was published on Tuesday (1).
According to the article, the in depth publication by Keogh warned Tameside hospital that the care being provided is below the standard that should be expected for an NHS hospital of its kind. Alongside this the report also criticised the management of certain departments within the hospital that are reportedly leaving patients vulnerable to medical negligence (1).
Suzanne Yates, Executive at medical negligence solicitors Asons, commented on the report saying:
“It has been no surprise to me that the hospital have been issued with a formal warning, taking into consideration the repeated complaints that have been publicised about alleged medical negligence. It is often careless mistakes that are leading to avoidable suffering of patients and with the right management, there are many strategies that could be implemented in order to raise the level of care that patients at Tameside hospital are receiving.”
Such examples of poor medical care include an incident where the health of five patients was put at serious risk when another patient suspected of carrying the hospital acquired infection, C Difficile, was placed alongside them in the six-bed bay- not only increasing the risk of contamination but also breaching the hospitals code of conduct, as reported by the Manchester Evening News (1).
Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, took action on the report and announced that Tameside hospital was to be placed on “Special Measures” to improve the performance of the hospital as a result of the concerning findings (1).
It has been reported by the Manchester Evening News that Christine Green stepped down from her £150,000 post as chief executive at Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust earlier this month, after allegations of poor management and bad practice were revealed by Sir Bruce Keogh’s report (1). This included the revelation of several incidents of substandard care, despite relatives of patients raising their concerns to members of staff. One concerning event in the report surrounded a patient being given penicillin, even though they had previously warned staff that they were highly allergic (1).
In the report, Sir Bruce Keogh states:
"The board should assure itself immediately that no patients are immediate risk of unsafe care due to the issues raised in this report and improve key safety processes, including management of deteriorating patients."
Suzanne Yates continued to say:
“I hope that this report is the beginning of positive change within Tameside Hospital. No patient should be admitted to hospital expecting to be exposed to clinical negligence, and with the hospital being placed under such scrutiny, there should be no reason why great improvements can’t be made. The level that the hospital are currently operating at is unacceptable and it’s a great relief that this has finally been recognised by the health secretary”.
Anyone that has been subjected to substandard care may be able to make a medical negligence compensation claim. To find out more information on medical negligence or to speak to a specialist medical negligence solicitor, visit http://www.asons.co.uk or phone 01204 521 133.
