Aspen Orthopaedics Associates Doctors Win Award
Aspen, CO (PRWEB) July 31, 2014 -- The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) annually gives the The O'Donoghue Award to the best overall research paper dealing with clinical-based research or human in-vivo research. As part of a multicenter cohort, Dr. Mark Purnell and Dr. Lindsay Harris of Aspen Orthopaedic Associates were presented with this prestigious award at the annual AOSSM meeting earlier this month in Seattle, Washington.
Dr. Purnell and Dr. Harris were asked to participate in this landmark study on ACL revision surgery that included multiple academic centers, fellowship trained private practice surgeons, and an unprecedented number of patient participants. The purpose of this study was to determine if using a graft from the patient (versus from a cadaver) changes their outcome for sports function, activity level, osteoarthritis symptoms, graft re-rupture, and reoperation at two years following revision ACL reconstruction. The research indicated that using a graft from the patient, known as an autograft, produced the best results for all of these factors.
“We will personally utilize the findings of this study, and our manuscript will educate surgeons, to improved revision ACL reconstruction results for patients,” states Dr. Harris. “We are proud to continue the tradition at AOA of high quality, cutting edge care in the Roaring Fork Valley."
The importance of this study is shown by the presentation of the prestigious O'Donoghue Award and the praise garnered by the orthopedic community.
“It has been a great opportunity to be a part of this multicenter revision ACL reconstruction cohort study," says Dr. Purnell, "and an honor to win the O’Donoghue Award. We are continuing to investigate the best possible outcomes for our patients.”
