Aspen’s Clinical Informatics Director Among First Group of Physicians to Receive American Board of Preventative Medicine Clinical Informatics Board Certification
Denver, CO (PRWEB) February 07, 2014 -- Aspen Advisors, a U.S.-based healthcare consulting firm, announced today that Aspen Director of Clinical Informatics, Mark Van Kooy, MD, was among the first to receive board certification in the Clinical Informatics sub-specialty by the American Board of Preventative Medicine. The first examination for certification in the sub-specialty of Clinical Informatics was offered from October 7-18, 2013, and the certification became effective January 1, 2014. Dr. Van Kooy was among the select group of 432 physicians earning certification in the inaugural certification examination.

Dr. Van Kooy met the requirements for certification in the sub-specialty of Clinical Informatics via his education, licensure, and practice pathway:
• Dr. Van Kooy holds certification from the American Board of Family Medicine with a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatric Medicine;
• He graduated from New Jersey Medical School, a medical school in the U.S. accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and is licensed to practice medicine in the state of New Jersey;
• Dr. Van Kooy has completed broad-based professional practice with a significant Clinical Informatics responsibility for more than 8 years including:
o Serving as Medical Director of Informatics for a New Jersey health system with primary responsibility for the adoption and implementation of Soarian Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) and physician documentation;
o Coaching and mentoring physicians in clinical IT leadership roles such as new Chief Medical Information Officers (CMIOs) for a number of clients across the U.S.;
o Leading an 14-member team of clinical business analysts, nursing informaticists and imaging technology specialists in the support of over 50 clinical applications including core clinical IT systems in the role of Information Services Director of Clinical Applications for a four-hospital health system;
o Working with CMIOs, physician leadership, and nursing and ancillary staff to determine conversion requirements for data from the hospitals in support of an enterprise Epic electronic health record (EHR) implementation at a multi-hospital health system in New England;
o Providing CMIO support for the implementation of Epic at a two-hospital integrated delivery network in Phoenix including communication planning and execution, order set development, review and approval, physician governance, planning and implementation for clinical decision support and role development; and
o Supporting the physician leads in a Soarian CPOE project at a tertiary medical center in Jersey City, which included assisting in role development, communication planning, process and policy review and consensus development, change management, physician governance and CPOE build and implementation.
