AT&T Contribution Provides LULAC Relocated and Expanded Empower Hispanic America Technology Center with Essential Technology
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) August 05, 2016 -- As part of an effort to help ensure the Latino community has access to dependable and useful technology, the League of United Latin America Citizens (LULAC), with the help of AT&T, upgraded and relocated one of its Empower Hispanic America with Technology Centers, known as LNESC Philadelphia. The technology center is one of 60 such facilities around the country. Upgrades to the center included computer equipment, office applications software and technology curriculum. Additionally, technology support was made available to assist with the use of this new equipment.
During a celebration of the grand opening of LNESC Philadelphia’s newly located program, located within the Fishtown Recreation Center, community leaders, AT&T representatives and center staff came together to help the community learn about the new equipment.
Upgrading LULAC Empower Hispanic America with Technology Centers is essential to ensure that the Latino community has access to dependable and useful technology. Such access provides Latinos around the country with access to education and skills training in order to succeed in the workforce.
“While we continue to make progress in closing the digital divide, much more can be done to ensure our community’s access to important Internet resources to advance their educational prospects and employment opportunities. Through the generous support of private companies like AT&T, we can ensure a better future for our communities through technology,” said Roger C. Rocha Jr., LULAC National President.
Additionally, Shane Weller, Director of LNESC Philadelphia added, “LNESC is extremely excited about our new location inside Fishtown Recreation Center. LNESC's new and upgraded facilities will allow LNESC to continue our work with the Kensington community while provide services and advocacy for Latinos living in and around the Fishtown neighborhood.”
Joseph Divis, AT&T’s executive director for External Affairs, said programs like this equip people with the technology literacy and skills that are fundamental today.
“At AT&T, we want to help young people reach their highest potential. One way we do this is by supporting programs that can help them with the tech skills they need to succeed in school, on the job and in life. We’re excited to team up with LNESC Philadelphia to spark innovation and empower students and the community to use these new technologies for personal, career and community growth,” Divis said.
Individuals who visit the centers will now have the technology they need to complete résumés, and college applications. The new technology will also be used for GED preparation, financial aid research, online citizenship classes and job-search programs. The centers also provide individuals with the use of high-speed Internet access and basic office applications software to develop job skills and expand career options.
This effort builds upon LULAC’s long standing work with AT&T, which includes the initial establishment of 23 centers in 2004 and 32 centers in 2007 as well as 7 center upgrades in 2015.
