Athlete George Hood To Attempt World Record for Plank Onboard USS Midway Museum On Veterans Day 2016
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) October 11, 2016 -- Ultra-endurance athlete George E. Hood will attempt to break the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest held abdominal plank on the flight deck of the USS Midway, November 11, 2016. This extraordinary feat of mental and physical endurance is a fundraiser for Semper Fi Fund and is sponsored by the Marine Corps Aviation Association Marion E. Carl Chapter and presented by Brava Creative Group. This event is the first of its kind onboard the iconic ship and will be part of the NBC 7 "Salute To Service" festival on Veterans Day.
Hood’s goal is to break the current GWR of 8 hours, 1 minute, 1 second and raise at least $25,000 for Semper Fi Fund. The event will be broadcast live from the flight deck via streaming video.
A former U.S. Marine Corps officer and retired DEA Agent, Hood has received international acclaim for his record setting and fundraising events for Semper Fi Fund. He trains 7-8 hours a day, which includes approximately 4-6 hours of plank time. Hood is sponsored by Eggplant Technologies, manufacturers of Move It, a mobile-connected portable fitness system Hood co-developed and uses during training.
Hood has set nine world records in a variety of fitness areas, most notably for the longest time in a plank position. He is the only individual to have set the plank record 4 times and is the current U.S. record holder, ranked number two in the world.
Hood is on a mission to set a new world record and inspire others to move beyond bumper-sticker support for the military. “The best way for people to show support for our active duty military and veterans is to do something meaningful on their behalf,” said Hood. “ If what I do inspires people around the world, then I urge everyone to take the next logical step and be just as inspired to donate to Semper Fi Fund."
Maintaining a plank position for an extended period of time demands incredible mental and physical strength. “Endurance is a Marine Corps leadership trait that I learned early on,” said Hood. “When I consider the sacrifices veterans have made to preserve our freedom, any pain I feel during an endurance plank pales in comparison. Setting a world record is my way of letting veterans know that their service to this country is appreciated and not forgotten."
Hood, a certified personal trainer, has been setting world records and raising over $125,000 for charity since 2006. Two of Hood’s sons are Marine Officers and one is a police officer, so this event has special significance for him.
“We're excited to join forces with George Hood to support a great organization like Semper Fi Fund," said Major Chris Alvino, a volunteer for the Marion E. Carl Chapter. “I cannot think of a better day or location for the MCAA to support his world record attempt than on Veteran’s Day aboard the USS Midway."
Before opening as a museum in 2004, the USS Midway was America’s longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century. Now berthed in San Diego, the ship was the original home of the Navy’s TOPGUN fighter school and is known for naval aviation breakthroughs, as well as humanitarian missions.
The NBC 7 "Salute To Service" festival is an annual event that draws thousands to the ship to honor the military and experience living history. The day kicks off with a Veterans Day parade, followed by special events onboard the ship. Visitors can witness Hood’s world record breaking attempt on the flight deck from 10pm – 4pm. In addition to local broadcast coverage, viewers from around the world will be able to watch via live streaming video.
