Athletic Trainer Carolyn Peters and Hall of Famer Charlie Joiner Was Honored by San Diego Sports Medicine Foundation at this year's Taste at the Cove.
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) August 31, 2016 -- On Thursday, Aug. 25, La Jolla Cove played host to all things outstanding in the fields of sports and medicine. San Diego Sports Medicine Foundation’s (SDSMF) annual fundraiser, Taste at the Cove, returned for its 15th year, bringing food, one-of-a-kind auction items and professional athletes together. In addition to the festivities, Taste at the Cove honored one community legend and one medical champion. The five-star charity event took place in the open-air place at Scripps Park at La Jolla Cove.
As one of San Diego’s longest running and unique charitable events, Taste at the Cove featured food from over 30 of San Diego’s best restaurants, including Cusp Dining & Drinks, Catania, Duke’s and more. Guests enjoyed hosted bars, opportunity drawings, plus silent and live auctions. The event benefited the SDSMF’s mission to provide a medical safety net for injured youth with limited financial means in order to return them back to health, sports and life.
This year's community legend honoree was pro football Hall of Famer and Chargers Ring of Honor inductee, Charlie Joiner, who was honored for his incredible career and contributions to the community on and off the field. On the field, Joiner has over 40 years of service as a player and coach under his belt; half of those years with the Chargers. He’s the only athlete to be a player and coach for the Chargers across five different decades. When he retired at the age of 39 with the Chargers, he ranked as the leading receiver of all-time with 750 catches. On the sidelines, Joiner dedicated over 20 years of his life to the Winning Spirit Award & Scholarships.
This year’s medical champion honoree was Head Athletic Trainer/Strength Specialist and Senior Women's Administrator for San Diego Christian College, Carolyn Peters. Peters is an ATC Spotter for the NFL, she is on the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Directors, and was an Athletic Trainer at San Diego State University for 21 years where she provided care for all 19 sports at some point in her career. Carolyn Greer, MA, ATC, Associate Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine at University of San Diego presented the award. "I was honored to present the San Diego Sports Medicine Foundation Medical Champion award to Carolyn Peters. She exemplifies the profession of athletic training by her leadership, dedication and commitment to educating the athletic trainers of the future." states Carolyn Greer.
