Atlanta Humane Society Announces New President Cal Morgan
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) January 14, 2014 -- Atlanta Humane Society (AHS) today announced the selection of Cal Morgan as the organization’s new president effective February 3, 2014. Morgan comes to Atlanta from Michigan Humane Society (MHS) where he has served as president and CEO since 2001. Morgan replaces Rick Aiken who has led AHS as the interim president since May 22, 2013.
Under Morgan’s leadership, MHS became one of the country’s largest animal welfare organizations and cares for over 100,000 animals each year through its three full-service adoption and veterinary centers, along with numerous offsite adoption centers. Early on in his tenure, Morgan set a goal of achieving 100% placement of healthy animals by 2010 – a goal which was achieved two years ahead of schedule and which continues to be reached annually. Throughout, Morgan placed a strong emphasis on expanding community outreach and engagement as well as focusing on the core issues which result in animal homelessness, including expanding the organization’s spay/neuter efforts.
Additionally, Morgan’s strong business acumen has helped facilitate impressive financial growth for MHS over the years, and he is responsible for doubling the operating budget through major gifts, special events and integrated marketing. “In Cal we have found a president who is deeply committed to our mission and possesses the leadership experience necessary to implement change and stimulate growth,” says Horace Nalle, chair of the Board of Directors. “Cal is a skilled businessman and strategist, but he’s also a humanitarian. He is truly a versatile and accomplished leader, and the Atlanta Humane Society can only flourish under his governance.”
AHS had a successful 2013, placing 7,296 dogs and cats into new homes and performing 11,382 spay/neuter surgeries, 53% as part of the Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Program. The organization also assisted the ASPCA and Humane Society of the United States in a multi-state dogfighting bust that rescued 367 dogs. Morgan plans to build on these successes by strengthening the relationships AHS has with other animal welfare groups and continuing to grow the shelter’s spay/neuter efforts.
“The opportunities to grow and expand the scope of work and services to save more animal lives are great, and I’m looking forward to bringing over twenty-five years of nonprofit leadership experience to the greater Atlanta community,” says Morgan.
Morgan is a graduate of Oakland University’s School of Business Administration. He earned a graduate certificate in non-profit management at Emory University and also completed an executive education program at Harvard Business School. Morgan is the immediate past chairman of the board for the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators and a founding member of the National Federation of Humane Societies.
Atlanta Humane Society will hold an open house on Wednesday, February 5 from 2-4 p.m. at the Howell Mill Campus to give supporters, volunteers and the media an opportunity to meet the new president and take a behind-the-scenes tour of the 58,000 square foot animal care facility.
