Attorney Elizabeth Shollenberger Receives Marilyn Stagg Award from White Plains Democratic Committee
New York, NY (PRWEB) May 07, 2014 -- The White Plains Democratic Committee has just honored New York consumer protection attorney Elizabeth Shollenberger with the Marilyn Stagg Award, which honors her for over a decade of activism and leadership on behalf of the Democratic Party. U.S. Congressman Jerrold Nadler officially presented Attorney Shollenberger with the Marilyn Stagg Award on May 4, 2014. U.S. Congresswoman Nita Lowey and New York Democratic State Committeeman Bill Alexander were also speakers at the award ceremony. Ms. Shollenberger has served for more than 10 years as Chair of the White Plains Democratic Committee. Previously, she spent 20 years as a Democratic activist and leader in Greenwich Village. She has dedicated herself, in particular to protection of tenants’ rights, defending voting rights and encouraging Democratic voter mobilization, and fighting economic inequality.
According to the White Plains Democratic Party’s website, the Marilyn Stagg Award is given each year to an individual who has contributed to the Democratic Party in an extraordinary way. The award is named after Marilyn Stagg, an early Democratic activist in White Plains who played a vital role in laying the foundation for the party’s recent successes.
Attorney Shollenberger joined Schlanger & Schlanger in 2012. Prior to going into private practice, she held the positions of Managing Attorney of the Elder Law Unit of Bronx Legal Services, and of Director of the Government Benefits, Elder Law, Unemployment & Consumer Law units at Queens Legal Services. Ms. Shollenberger’s main focus areas in her legal practice include consumer protection, the protection of tenants’ rights, matrimonial law and election law. Throughout most of her career, Ms. Shollenberger has proudly and successfully advocated on behalf of low-income individuals.
In addition to the Marilyn Stagg Award, Attorney Shollenberger was honored by the New York City Bar Association in 2007 with the Legal Services Award for providing her clients with high-quality legal representation. In 1997, she was a recipient of the NYCBA’s Thurgood Marshall Award, for her advocacy on behalf of death row inmates. Over the years, Attorney Shollenberger has served as a full-time faculty member at N.Y.U. School of Law and as an adjunct professor at New York Law School. Furthermore, she founded and ran a walk-in legal clinic where tenants in Greenwich Village could obtain advice on housing law related matters. In addition to serving as Chair of the White Plains Democratic Committee’s Chair, Ms. Shollenberger has served as the Chair of the Lower Hudson Valley Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union.
