Attorney Greg Cook Illustrates Insurance Issues Post-Property Loss
Milwaukee, WI (PRWEB) July 20, 2017 -- People today are bombarded by television ads seeking to persuade them to spend their hard-earned cash on this or that insurance company. “Every company has a catchy phrase, television personality, or even animal caricature carefully choreographed in the quest to convince consumers to insure their car, boat, motorcycle and home with them,” said Greg Cook, founder of the Greg Cook Law Offices, S.C., who focuses on denials of insurance claims. “Some of the ads are funny, some of them are touching, and all of them contain persuasive pitches to make the right choice.”
The claims handling process is treated lightly as well, simply calling out a phrase and they will appear like a genie out of a bottle. However, no one ever talks about the issues that invariably develop in property losses.
In order to educate policyholders on what happens after the premium dollar is collected from one’s friendly, smiling agent, Cook shares the following two scenarios:
No. 1: An insured family usually rests easy. “They think they are covered from fire, or storm or unsafe act and like most of us, nothing happens to them,” noted Cook. “They become part of the vast majority who are fortunate not to have suffered a personal injury or property damage loss. Nothing has happened and life goes on.”
No. 2: They are not so lucky. Perhaps it is a hail storm or tornado that strikes their home. Worse yet, fire or explosion, or someone is seriously injured by an uninsured motorist. “In all of these cases, they turn to the company they have paid premium dollars to, some over many years without any mishap,” added Cook. “The relationship is treated in the law as a special one -- the insurance contract they purchased requires the insurance company to act fairly and responsibly and treat the insured exactly as it would want to be treated .If this doesn’t happen, they may need legal help.”
Reading an insurance policy is not something anyone enjoys. Most people don’t read their policies unless they have to and even then, usually need the services of someone skilled at contract interpretation to understand and explain it to them. “Many people learn after a loss that because the way the contract is written, the loss they suffered is not going to be completely covered or may not be covered at all,” concluded Cook.
