Attorney Majid Foroozandeh Examines 2nd Amendment Issues Post-Orlando
Irvine, CA (PRWEB) June 28, 2016 -- According to a June 13, 2016, CNN article, Omar Mateen, an American-born man who had pledged allegiance to ISIS, killed 49 people and wounded 53 others at a gay nightclub in Orlando, which was the deadliest mass shooting in United States history and the nation’s worst terror attack since 9/11. Mateen, who was interviewed by the FBI in 2013 and 2014 but not found to be a threat, carried out his attack with a Sig Sauer MCX assault rifle and a Glock 17 pistol, which he purchased legally despite being on the FBI watch list for suspected terrorists twice.
“Although the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution guarantees ‘the right of the people to keep and bear Arms,’ which ‘shall not be infringed,’ I believe we should strike a balance on the right to have arms with what is happening today in our society, such as the recent tragedy in Orlando,” said attorney Majid Foroozandeh.
The language of the Second Amendment has sparked debate for years regarding its intended scope, with some opponents arguing that it is antiquated and that citizens do not have an individual right to possess guns and that the government has the authority to regulate firearms without implicating a constitutional right. Conversely, a number of supporters of the Second Amendment hold that “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms” is something of a sacred bond between the citizenry and its government, and any law altering or abolishing that promise is unconstitutional and hinders their right to self-defense.
“However, senseless acts of mass violence, such as those perpetrated by Omar Mateen in Orlando, have nothing to do with self-defense,” said Foroozandeh. “Furthermore, because the Senate recently rejected a series of gun measures in the wake of Orlando that would have expanded background checks and prevented suspected terrorists from obtaining weapons, we will undoubtedly experience more of these types of tragedies in the future.”
