Attorneys at Coplan & Crane Announce Firm Is Handling Claims Related to Stryker Hip Stem Settlement

According to a Stryker Corp. news release, the company announced a settlement agreement* to compensate eligible U.S. patients who had surgery before November 3, 2014, to replace one or both of the hip stems. According to the Stryker news release, the company will spend more than $1.4 billion to resolve claims. According to a Bloomberg News article, Stryker Corp. will pay a base amount of $300,000 per case to patients who had the devices surgically removed, one of Stryker’s lawyers told a New Jersey judge. The company faces more than 4,000 lawsuits consolidated in New Jersey state court and federal court in Minnesota, Bloomberg reports.
On July 6, 2012, Stryker initiated a voluntary recall of its Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck stems. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration published Stryker’s statement about the recall on the FDA website. The Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II hip stems contain metal components that may rub together, grinding metal particles off the implant, and allowing them to contaminate the tissue around the joint. Stryker says the problem may result in an adverse local tissue reaction, as well as possible pain and/or swelling in or around the hip.
